Ongoing

East Africa: More than 21 million people are experiencing severe food insecurity, with many more in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia are facing the driest conditions in 40 years, while South Sudan has suffered a fifth consecutive year of severe flooding. These climate extremes and ongoing conflicts have caused widespread food shortages. Oxfam is working with partners to provide aid including clean water and cash assistance. Yemen: Fighting has intensified and hundreds of civilians have been killed and injured in recent weeks in the seven-year conflict which has left Yemen on the brink of famine. Over 16 million people rely on food aid for survival in one of the world’s largest humanitarian crises. Only half of health facilities are fully working and millions of people have fled their homes and live in camps. The UK Government announced a big increase in new arms licences to Saudi Arabia, many of which will be used in the war in Yemen. Oxfam is working across the country providing aid including clean water and cash for people to buy food and other essentials. Vaccines: Two years into the pandemic, the majority of people in the world’s poorest countries have still not received their initial doses of a COVID-19 vaccine. While Omicron may be less severe for those who are fully vaccinated, it and future variants pose a huge risk to the millions of people who are still unprotected. Oxfam is part of the People’s Vaccine Alliance, which is calling for governments and the pharmaceutical industry to work together and share science and technology in order to increase production of vaccines and make sure everyone, everywhere is protected from COVID-19. Climate: Climate change is hitting the poorest people on the planet the hardest with more extreme weather destroying people’s lives, homes and jobs. Oxfam is demanding that the UK Government keeps up momentum after the COP26 talks in Glasgow at the end of last year. It should use its COP Presidency to push other governments to follow through on their commitment to strengthen emissions reductions, as well as to end the era of fossil fuels in the UK and provide financial support to low-income countries that are already facing the impacts of the climate crisis.
